Amazing Car

Have you ever imagined that you might ride in a flying car someday? You might wish this when you are stuck in a traffic jam. Guess what! It is no longer just a dream. Recently, a company called Terrafugia announced its vision for the future of personal transportation. According to experts, a flying car will be available to the public within 10 years! So what kind of car is it?

The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) flying car is called “TF-X.” The maximum seating capacity of the car is four. It can do a maximum speed of around 322km per hour. TF-X, also known as an eco-friendly hybrid car, is equipped with both an electric motor and a gasoline engine.

How can the car fly in the sky? The secret are wings that are hidden in its body. The wings come out when the car takes off. The car can fly for up to 800km on a single charge. It is said that anyone will be able to drive it, because the car has artificial intelligence technology. It is simpler and safer than a light plane, and you do not need a pilot’s license to fly it. It also has a detailed and automatic navigation system.

“Terrafugia is about increasing the level of safety, simplicity, and convenience of aviation. TF-X is an opportunity to provide the world with a new dimension of personal freedom,” said Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich.

New Born Baby

http://news.yahoo.com/video/newborn-rescued-sewage-pipe-china-105339937.html

BEIJING - Dramatic and graphic video emerged over the weekend from China showing a newborn baby boy being rescued from a sewage pipe.
The 5-pound infant was discovered by residents in Jinhua, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, when they heard cries coming out of a fourth floor squat toilet in a local apartment building.
When the firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered a two-day old baby lodged in the piping below the toilet. After attempts to pull the baby out of the toilet failed, the rescuers resorted to sawing off a whole section of piping containing the baby and brought it to the neighboring hospital.
The video shows firefighters and doctors taking apart the sewer pipe piece by piece under the newborn was finally revealed from inside. State media reports said that the boy's umbilical cord and placenta was still attached at the time.
"Fortunately the baby survived. But the person [who abandoned him] is still suspected of attempted murder," an unidentified police officer told the state media on Hangzhou.com.cn. Police were looking for the parents of the baby boy.
The incident has conjured up intense emotions on Chinese social media especially after the news this weekend of separate newborn discovered in a dumpster in Hebei province. That newborn did not survive.
Posting on China's twitter-like Sina Weibo user @bhdrswxjs wrote: "This should be sentenced to death, they are killing their own baby. This is not the only abandoned baby case I saw in the past ten days, one threw in dumpster and died; the other one was fleshed into toilet, those are not actions human beings should do."

Positive Words

Encouraging, comforting and positive words, either written or spoken have the power to heal, inspire and transform thoughts and emotions. This is why you see people paste motivational posters on their walls. You probably have received and sent greeting cards with words of encouragement and words of wisdom.
Why do you think people go to “get motivated seminars” or listen to sermons? They want to get some inspiration and enlightenment. The speakers have lots of inspiring words and energy to share.

How To Decide What Is Right For You

What Do You Think

Say something about the tips given:

Here are 6 tips to help you decide what is right for you

1. Think of the End Result.
Right thinking produces right actions. When you know what you want, you will persist in spite of the initial lack of progress.
2. Stop Thinking Start Doing.
You can think and think again all day long on. You can listen to many opinions and suggestions. But if you don’t take action, you don’t get any result and you wouldn't know the outcome. The best way to determine for sure if something works is to take action.
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Wrong.
As Charlie T Jones said, “Don’t worry about having to make a right decision. Make it and then work to make it right.”
4. Educate Yourself.
Continue to feed your mind with useful information. It opens your mind to more options. When you have plenty of options, you can make better choices and do what is right and at the right time.
5. It’s Alright If You Don’t Fit In.
Don’t try to fit in to make people happy. What is right for others doesn't mean it’s decent for you too. You can’t please everyone. When it comes to determining your own life, you shouldn't allow others to do it for you.
6. Trust Your Intuition.
In order to hear, you must listen. And to enable you to listen to the voice within, you must learn to relax and be still.

 Discussion

1. Have you ever been in a dilemma when you wonder what is right for you?
2. Have you been in a situation when you didn't know which appropriate action to take?
3. How did you solve your problems before?
4. When you did make a decision, how did you come to the conclusion?
5. Did you rely on other people’s opinions?
6. Did you go against your own needs just to fit in?
 7. Or did you go ahead and did what you felt was proper and fitting even when you were uncertain of the outcome?

Reasons Why People Stay Single Longer.

Single women used to be on the lookout for guys out there to give them something to fill their needs. They wanted to feel loved, have someone to provide security, strength and support. And they dreaded the thought of being labeled a spinster or an old maid.

http://1opinionatedwoman.blogspot.com/2011/12/why-some-women-choose-to-stay-single.htmlNow, many women and men choose to live unmarried, independent and without companions and still feel comfortable with the single life. With the increase in divorce rate more are living alone. And many widows and widowers choose to remain single. They have found that being single has its advantages and benefits compared to being coupled.

These singles still date and have occasional flings but they aren't in a hurry to get tied down. They are taking their time and most of them feel that if it happens that they don’t get married by a certain age, so be it.

Reasons Why People Stay Single Longer

  1. Satisfying lifestyle.
  2. Freedom to make own choices.
  3. Have not healed from a hurt over the lost of someone special.
  4. Turning away from demands and crisis that can happen in intimate relationships.
  5. Pursuing careers and focusing mainly on financial and material rewards.
  6. Stopped dating for fear of rejection.
  7. Afraid to fall in love.
  8. Being selective.
  9. Feeling unworthy because of low self esteem.
  10. Have lost faith in finding love.
  11. Fear of commitment.
  12. Taking time off to uncover self.

 YOUR OPINION

1. What  would you think is an ideal age to settle down?

2. What advice would you give to single women?

3. Do you know someone who is at the age of 35 but was still single?

Bill Gates 'disrespects' South Korean president with casual handshake

South Korean President Park Geun-hye shaking hands with Microsoft founder Bill Gates before their meeting at the presidential Blue House in Seoul

Bill Gates has been accused of disrespecting Park Geun-hye, the South Korean president, after being pictured shaking hands with her, with one hand in his pocket.

The picture of the meet-and-greet between the Microsoft founder and Ms Park on Monday was front page news across the country. Some newspapers cropped out the offending pocketed hand, but most chose to highlight it.
"Cultural difference, or an act of disrespect?" the JoongAng Ilbo wrote in the accompanying caption.
"Disrespectful handshake? Casual handshake?" the Dong-A Ilbo asked.
While the presidential Blue House declined to comment, social networking sites were clogged with opinion.
"Even considering the cultural difference, there is an appropriate manner for certain occasions ... how can he put his hand in his pocket when meeting a leader of the state?" tweeted @msryu67.
Some news portals posted montages of Mr Gates shaking hands with other world leaders, which showed that he has some form when it comes to informal greetings.
In a 2008 meeting with Ms Park's predecessor Lee Myung-Bak, Gates also kept one hand pocketed, although a 2001 picture with then-President Kim Dae-Jung showed him adopting a more respectful, two-handed shake.
"Gates is a casual man who's not bound by customs so he shakes hands in this manner even when meeting heads of international organisations or top political figures," Dong-A Ilbo quoted an unnamed friend of his in Seoul as saying.
Some Koreans suggested the media criticism was misplaced.
"Please, people ... don't think your Confucian mindset is a universal norm elsewhere in the world," tweeted @itanomaly.
Mr Gates was in South Korea as chairman of the nuclear start-up TerraPower, promoting its project to develop a next-generation nuclear reactor.
Ms Park, meanwhile, was seeking the Microsoft founder's advice on her plans to build a "creative economy".

OPINION SAMPLES :
1. Diplomacy is not just for diplomats it is also a form of courtesy.
He is a very rich philanthropist he should be educated in the common cultural courtesies of the people he is visiting.  And true he is not a official representative of the USA but if he wants to not be seen as what we have been called for years as an ugly American he would be better served and better educated in the ways of the rest of the world.

2. Even in a Western context, Gates' posture and hand-in-pocket would be considered casual and not quite suited to the occasion. So would his pronounced slouch. Doesn't anyone remember the days when Western mothers/aunts/teachers would forever be telling boys to stand up straight and not stand or walk with hands in pockets? They were always considered loutish habits.
But...
1. Gates probably is a tad Aspergers. Cut him some slack. He almost certainly was not delivering an insult. He has also been raised in a Western world and a particular subculture in which the old manners are lightly regarded if known at all.
2. What is it about Asian and Middle Eastern cultures and their taboos? Remember when the entire Middle East would go apeshit because some American put his feet up and showed the sole of his shoe? Fine, they should have attended Arab taboo training and known better. But still, it's just the sole of a shoe. No Westerner could really internalize the idea  that such a harmless thing is insulting. More to the point, while we also have our taboos, no one ever goes to such extremes in reacting to them. Some dignitary could fart or pick his nose at our dinner tables. Personally I think it obvious and rational that these should be considered more disgusting than the harmless, relatively clean and non-smelling sole of a business shoe. But if some other culture thinks them weird Western taboos, so be it. What we don't do is have a public freakout or even threaten to kill people when our taboos are violated.

Girls Kidnapped now found after 10 years

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/missing-cleveland-girls-found-alive-decade-amanda-berry-19123556

It's been less than a day since Amanda BerryGina Dejesus and Michelle Knight were rescued after ten years of captivity in the home of Ariel Castro, and already some gruesome details of what the girls were forced to deal with during their kidnapping have come to light.
Among the disturbing details are reports of sex, beatings and miscarriages.
The women, who were found safe last night on Seymour Avenue, were forced to have sex with their captors, resulting in up to five pregnancies, several police sources tell Channel 3 News.
According to the source, one of the victims had two to three miscarriages in the Seymour Avenue because she was malnourished.
Another police source who is actively working on this investigation told NewsChannel5 at least five babies were born inside the home. It’s not clear if that number includes Berry’s 6-year-old daughter who was found in the house with the women.
One of those sources tells investigator Tom Meyer that the captors would beat the pregnant girls. Both sources say the babies didn't survive. The sources say it is unclear what happened following the pregnancies.
Investigators are going through the home for clues, including the backyard where they found "disturbed" dirt.

United Nations asks us to eat insects

A new United Nations report says that we should all eat insects. The report is from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. It is called "Edible Insects: Future Prospects for Food and Feed Security". The U.N. says it is important we eat insects to help the Earth. It gave three reasons why we should be adding insects to our diet. The first is they are good for our health. "Insects are healthy, nutritious alternatives to mainstream staples such as chicken, pork, beef and even fish." The second reason is they are better for the environment than breeding cows, sheep, and other animals. Finally, "insect farming" would help millions of poor families around the world eat and start a small business.
http://www.amusingplanet.com/2010/12/insects-as-food.html

Many cultures already include insects in their diet. The report says: "Many people around the world eat insects out of choice, largely because of the [tastiness]….More than 1, 900 species have reportedly been used as food." However, most people in Western or "developed" countries think the idea of eating insects is disgusting. The report says governments need to educate Westerners about the benefits of eating bugs so they get over the "disgust factor". Ento, a company in London that sells insect-based food, said it is difficult to get people to eat creepy-crawlies. It told the "New Scientist" magazine: "On paper, insects are fantastic, but on a plate, most people won't touch them."

Could we clone our organs to be used in a transplant?

How would you like a clone of yourself stowed away somewhere in case you need a new heart or liver, like a spare tire in the trunk of a car? That, in a nutshell, was the plot of the 2005 high-dollar, low-attendance sci-fi movie, "The Island." Hollywood heartthrobs Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor play dual roles portraying the rich and famous -- and their genetically identical clones. In an appropriate Orwellian twist, doctors must murder the "spare" clones in order to harvest needed body parts.
Chances are, "The Island" isn't a glimpse into the future. Nevertheless, it brings up a relevant point about the potential uses for human reproductive cloning. Organ transplants are difficult undertakings for two major reasons. First, you have to find a donor, and second, there's no guarantee that your body will accept the new organ. Statistically, organ demand far outweighs current supply. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, 28,356 Americans received organ transplants in 2007 -- around 78 percent of those came from deceased people. Yet as of August 2008, more than 99,000 people in the United States were on the national waiting list for organs [source: OPTN].

Dennis Rodman Plans New North Korea Trip, Hopes to Secure Release of Detained American (ABC News)

(PYONGYANG, North Korea) -- Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former NBA star turned unlikely diplomat of sorts, is planning a second visit to North Korea, this time with the goal of asking his new friend Kim Jong-un to release an American citizen currently jailed there.
Kenneth Bae, 44, has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after being accused of smuggling antigovernment propaganda into the country.
Though many are working so secure his release, Rodman had some harsh words about President Barack Obama’s ability to get the job done.
“Obama can’t do s--,” Rodman said in a rant on TMZ.com. “We got a black president [that] can’t even go and talk to him, how ‘bout that one?”
Rodman visited North Korea in February 2013, and he watched a basketball game with Jong Un, telling him “you have a friend for life.”
Rodman faced criticism for the visit and his relationship with the dictator, who he described as a “great guy,” during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
Rodman is hoping Jong Un will be a good friend and listen to him.
“I'm calling on the Supreme Leader of North Korea or as I call him ‘Kim’, to do me a solid and cut Kenneth Bae loose,” Rodman tweeted on Tuesday.
Despite his claims, and his odd friendship with the brutal Communist dictator, the United States isn’t putting their faith in the former all-star, according to ABC’s global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz.
“Look, last time he went over there as soon as he got back Kim Jong Un threatened to launch those missiles. We had a diplomatic crisis for months so I don't think Dennis Rodman did much good last time,” Raddatz said.
“Of course, everybody is hoping that the American is released. If Dennis Rodman can do something towards that end that's great, but nobody's counting on it.”

Some words descended largely unchanged since end of last ice age

Artist's concept by Randii Oliver via Wikimedia Commons

One of the most interesting stories of last week came from research by linguists suggesting that some words have descended largely unchanged since the end of the last Ice Age. This research – from Mark Pagel, an evolutionary theorist at the University of Reading in the UK, and colleagues – describes a method for discovering ancient language super families  The research uses cognates – that is, two words with a common origin – and statistical analysis of existing languages. It led the Washington Post to describe a sentence that might be translated into any one of hundreds of modern languages and still be at least partially understood by hunter-gatherers in Asia some 15,000 years ago. That is:
You, hear me! Give this fire to that old man. Pull the black worm off the bark and give it to the mother. And no spitting in the ashes!

Brain’s big frontal lobe not what makes humans smarter, says study

Animation illustrating frontal lobe of the human brainHuman intelligence cannot be explained by the size of the brain’s frontal lobes, say researchers. Many theories have considered that the expansion of the frontal lobe of our human brain was especially crucial to the development of modern human behavior, thought and language. A new study suggest this is not the case.
The new study suggests that supposedly more ‘primitive’ areas, such as the cerebellum, were equally important in the expansion of the human brain. These areas may therefore play unexpectedly important roles in human cognition and its disorders, such as autism and dyslexia, say the researchers.

Eye-tracking software will look at you shop

http://www.michellehenry.fr/mag.htm            New computer software will soon be keeping an eye on you, or on your eyes, when you go shopping. It is called the Sideways project because it tracks the movement of your eyes as you glance at products on shelves. The researchers, from Britain's Lancaster University, told the BBC that the technology would be a common feature in stores before the end of the decade. Senior researcher Andrea's Bulling said: "The system uses a single ordinary camera…[It] detects the faces of people walking by and calculates where the eyes are relative to the eye corners." This information is then used to flash up adverts related to what products you were looking at longest as you pass by video screens ahead of you.
Eye-tracking technology is being used in a number of different situations. One is to help motorists better identify cyclists on roads. Studies suggest drivers are five times likelier to spot pedestrians than people riding bicycles. This could significantly cut the number of road deaths. Eye-tracking can also be used to allow people to use their eyes as a mouse to scroll through and select content on screens. Disabled people are already using this technology to enhance their daily mobility. Last month the tech giant Samsung launched a smartphone that monitors what users look at on-screen. Mr Bulling said: "It is really gaining momentum. I fully expect this technology to become available widely in the near future."

Discipline vs. Punishment

http://pubs.ext.vt.edu/350/350-111/350-111.html

Discipline for Young Children - Discipline and Punishment: What is the Difference?

Effective discipline helps children learn to control their behavior so that they act according to their ideas of what is right and wrong, not because they fear punishment. For example, they are honest because they think it is wrong to be dishonest, not because they are afraid of getting caught.

The purpose of punishment is to stop a child from doing what you don't want - and using a painful or unpleasant method to stop him.

There are basically four kinds of punishment
physical punishment - slapping, spanking, switching, paddling, and using a belt or hair brush.
verbal punishment - shaming, ridiculing, using cruel words, saying "I don't love you."
withholding rewards - "You can't watch TV if you don't do your homework."
penalties - "You broke the window so you will have to pay for it with money from your allowance."
physical punishment - slapping, spanking, switching, paddling, and using a belt or hair brush.
verbal punishment - shaming, ridiculing, using cruel words, saying "I don't love you."
withholding rewards - "You can't watch TV if you don't do your homework."
penalties - "You broke the window so you will have to pay for it with money from your allowance."

The first two kinds of punishment, physical and verbal, are not considered to be effective discipline methods. The other two, withholding rewards and giving penalties, can be used either as effective discipline methods or as punishment - depending on how parents administer them.

Airport Information

http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Entebbe_Airport_2009-08-27_13-01-48.JPG>> The airport is your first stop before leaving on your dream vacation or trip. Generally speaking, you should arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Don't arrive 10 minutes before your plane departs. You can park your car in long-term parking if you are planning to be away for a few days, or you can ask someone to drop you off in the loading zone right in front of the airport terminal. In some cases, you can check your bags there at curbside, or you might have to go to the check-in counter inside the airport. Many airports now allow you to check in at a computer kiosk, but you will still need to check your bags if you have any. Once you are checked in, you will have to pass through security where they will check your ID and your carry-on bags. You will also need to walk through a metal detector, which will check for illegal items. After you pass through security, you can walk to the gate where you can wait to board your flight. Just wait until they call your section to board. They usually seat first-class passengers and those who need assistance first. Enjoy your flight.

Sample Expressions

A.

Talk About The Other Person

Most people are glad to talk about themselves and will be pleased to respond to any questions or comments about themselves. Before you start, observe what the other person is doing, reading, saying, looking or wearing and think of something you would be interested to know more about.
At a party:
‘That’s an interesting T-shirt. Tell me, what does that symbol stands for?’
In the street:
‘You look lost. How can I help?’
‘I am looking for Body shop, would you mind telling me the direction to get there?’
After a meeting:
‘That was an interesting comment you made just now. Tell me, why do you think the property prices are escalating lately?’
To an air stewardess:
‘I have often curious about the qualifications required to be an air stewardess. Do you mind telling me about it?’
At a sports event:
‘You’re the best player here. What do you do to train?’
While jogging:
‘What kind of running shoes are those ? Why do you choose that brand?’

B.

Talk About the Situation

At a bowling game:
‘Which team do you think will win? Why do you say that?’
At an art gallery:
‘What do you suppose the artist wanted to say?’
At a supermarket:
‘I notice you are buying artichokes. Do you by any chance know how to choose a good one? ‘
‘I notice that you bought some apple cider vinegar. I have always wondered, is it really beneficial for health?’
‘I notice that you have chosen some beetroot. I have always been curious, how do you prepare them?’
"Would you like a taste of my forbidden fruit?" ~ contributed byJasmine JellyBaby
Waiting in line for a movie:
‘What have you heard about this movie? What made you decide to watch it?’
Waiting in a queue:
‘Hi, this queue doesn't seem to be moving much, does it? Since we have to spend hours here queuing, I guess I should introduce myself: I am Dave. What is your name?’
To a neighbor:
‘Your roses bloom so beautifully. What’s your secret? What’s that you’re working on?’
‘I could not help but notice that you have a new dog. What’s his name? Where did you get it from?’
In an elevator:
‘This must be the world’s slowest elevator.’ (If the other person is interested to talk to you, he or she may response by comparing it to another elevator somewhere else.)
And here is a good ice-breaker in an elevator by David Wygant:
“What is it about elevators that make everyone so quiet? We all do the same thing in an elevator: we look at the buttons and say nothing. So, how are you today?”
At a Laundromat :
‘Would you mind showing the settings I should use for this machine?’
‘How much detergent do you think I should put in?’
In a classroom:
‘I missed the lecture yesterday, what did the lecturer talk about?’,
‘What do you think will come out in the exam?’,
‘What do you think the teacher meant by that?’
At a shop to the salesgirl,
‘What would you recommend for a party dress?’
In an airplane:
‘Which movie would you recommend? Have you watched any of these movies?’
‘Hi, I could not help but noticed the book you are reading, ‘Eat, Pray, Love’. So, what do you think about it? And by the way, my name is Dave.
In a party:
‘How did you happen to be at this party?’
